Corner Store Auditions

Corner Store

Seeking submissions from Non-Union actors available as Dayton Local Hires for the feature film, Corner Store, written & directed by Ian Mullen.

At 22, Cass is back in Dayton, newly out of college and unsure what comes next when she takes a job at The Neon, a quaint independent movie theatre in Dayton. While working there, she’ll go on a path of self-discovery as she explores what it takes to be creative and the importance of the families that you find.

Casting For:

  • MS. HAZEL (60s, woman) Cass's former high-school art teacher and mentor. Warm, perceptive, and deeply familiar with Cass, Ms. Hazel cares enough about her former student not to flatter her. She challenges Cass to recognize that something is missing from her current artwork—and, in doing so, quietly pushes her toward finding her own voice.

  • JAZZ (30s, man) Former Neon employee and longtime friend of the staff. Opinionated, eccentric, and intensely specific about movies, microbreweries, and just about everything else. Smart enough to make his pretentiousness convincing and funny enough to make it endearing.

  • DEAN (40s, man) A beloved Neon regular with a familiar routine and genuine connection to the staff. Dean is on the autism spectrum. For this role, we are specifically interested in seeing actors with autism.

  • RALPH (50s, man.) Retired, gay, and a longtime Neon regular. Familiar, conversational, and completely comfortable in the space. Frequently seen alongside his friend Amy.

  • AMY (50s, woman.) A longtime Neon regular and Ralph's friend. Their easy conversations and familiar routines are part of the everyday community that makes The Neon feel like home.

  • RODNEY (40s, man.) Attractive, polished, and clearly accustomed to expensive things. Has an existing history with Patrick.

  • TRACY (22, woman) Bubbly, polished, and a former high-school classmate of Cass. Tracy attended NYU, now lives in New York, and seems to have transitioned effortlessly into an exciting adult life.

  • MARTIN (mid-20s, man.) Tracy's aloof boyfriend. An analyst living with Tracy in New York.

  • CLAIRE (early 60s, woman.) Chic, confident Neon regular with an extremely specific drink order and the air of someone who expects people to remember it.

  • FERREAL. (Drag performer.) One of the RubiGirls, a local drag group that performs at The Neon. Big personality, funny, affectionate, and entirely comfortable commanding attention.

  • BURLEY BORIS BRONSON (middle age/older man.) A former Dayton Wrestling Federation wrestler and childhood celebrity to Cass. Now older and far removed from his wrestling days, but still instantly recognizable to someone who grew up watching him.

  • RECURRING CUSTOMER (60s+, woman.) A longtime Neon regular with a knack for turning even the smallest issue into a conversation. Blunt, persistent, unintentionally funny, and completely at home at the theatre. A recurring comic presence throughout the film.

ADDITIONAL SMALL SPEAKING ROLES

This film includes a number of smaller roles representing the customers, regulars, and characters who move through The Neon Theater and downtown Dayton. We welcome submissions from Dayton-area actors, improvisers, theatre artists, comedians, performers, and community members interested in being considered for these roles. Some roles may require only a short video introduction or brief reading rather than a traditional self-tape.
